What Guests Are Saying About Their Lost River Stay

Our guests love our properties! Here’s what our recent guests are saying

Road’s End Retreat

My family and I rented this beautiful home to host Thanksgiving, and it was amazing! It was exactly how the pictures looked, and the host was great and responsive. I will be booking here again! It definitely felt like home. 10/10 recommend to anyone considering.

Wild Turkey Ridge

This was our first cabin trip, so we weren’t quite sure what to expect—but it turned out to be an amazing experience. Tony was very responsive, and the check-in and check-out process was smooth and easy. The first thing that really stood out was how clean the place was, which we really appreciated. The cabin had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. It’s also about a 15-minute drive to an amazing butcher shop called Lost River Butcher Block—definitely worth a visit. I’d recommend not bringing your own meat and instead buying it there. They have fresh selections as well as frozen options to take home. Another highlight is Trout Pond Lake, which is only about 8 minutes away and absolutely worth checking out. The water is clear, and you can fish along the sides. We spent most of our evenings enjoying the peaceful atmosphere by the fire and relaxing in the jacuzzi. This place felt like the perfect retreat for both body and soul. I highly recommend this place—you won’t regret it!

The Postscript Perch

We enjoyed staying at Tony’s mountain house. The house clean and fully equipped. The land and play area for kids were wonderful. Tony was very responsive when we had questions. We would definitely come back!

Chateau Franklin

Perfect getaway. The place was very private with nobody around, which made it feel peaceful and relaxing. The area was beautiful and exactly what I was looking for. Would definitely stay again.

Redwood Lodge

My kids (7 and 9) and I loved our stay. It was the perfect getaway, a really unique spot. Modern touches on the inside while still feeling like you’re one with nature. It had everything we needed. We took advantage of the grill and fire pit. We had a blast. Highly recommend!

Orion

Saddle Ridge Chalet

This place is lovely if you want to unwind and experience nature. The house is very luxurious and we enjoyed the fireplace and jacuzzi. The kitchen has everything you need to make gourmet meals.

Discover What’s Around Your Lost River Cabin Rental

Hiking and Ridge Views

The trails around Lost River offer some of the best ridge walking in the Allegheny Mountains. Crummett Mountain Trail climbs steadily to open views that stretch across the valley on clear days, and the network of connecting paths gives hikers the flexibility to build a route that fits their pace and energy. The forest here is quiet, the terrain is varied, and the experience of having a trail almost entirely to yourself is one that becomes harder to find every year. Your Blue Maple cabin is exactly the right place to return to when the legs are tired and the day has been well spent.

The Lost River

The river itself is worth seeking out as a destination. The Lost River flows above ground before disappearing into a cave at the base of Crummett Mountain, traveling underground for roughly a mile and a half before re-emerging as the Cacapon River further north. It is one of the more unusual natural features in West Virginia and gives the area a sense of mystery that matches the landscape around it. Early morning visits, before the day warms up, are especially worth the effort.

George Washington National Forest

Bordering the park to the west, George Washington National Forest opens up thousands of additional acres for exploration. Backcountry hiking, fishing, wildlife watching, and long stretches of forest road give outdoors-focused visitors more than a long weekend could cover. For those who want to go deeper into the mountains and further off the beaten path, the national forest is an outstanding extension of everything the park already offers.

Wardensville and Local Flavor

The small town of Wardensville sits just minutes from the park and punches well above its size when it comes to character. The Wardensville Garden Market is a genuine community hub, and the town’s handful of local shops and eateries give it an authenticity that more developed mountain towns tend to lose over time. Pick up provisions for dinner back at the cabin, browse what is in season, and take the long way home through the valley. That kind of afternoon is exactly what this part of West Virginia is for.

Day Trips Worth Taking

Moorefield, the county seat of Hardy County, is a short drive away and worth an afternoon for its historic downtown and access to the South Branch of the Potomac River. Berkeley Springs is about an hour north and adds the option of a mineral bath day to any extended stay. Seneca Rocks, one of the most dramatic geological formations in the eastern United States, is within reach for those who want to add a proper landmark to their itinerary. Your Blue Maple cabin is always a comfortable place to come back to at the end of any of it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lost River Cabin Rentals

Where exactly is Lost River State Park?

Lost River State Park is located in Hardy County in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, near the small community of Mathias. It sits along the Hardy and Pendleton County line in the Allegheny Mountains, surrounded by George Washington National Forest and within easy reach of Wardensville and Moorefield.

How far is Lost River State Park from Washington D.C.?

Roughly 2.5 to 3 hours from the D.C. and Northern Virginia suburbs, making it one of the more achievable mountain escapes for a long weekend without a full travel day. The drive through the Shenandoah Valley and into the Alleghenies is scenic on its own and part of the experience.

What can you do at Lost River State Park?

The park offers hiking on a well-maintained trail system, swimming in warmer months, horseback riding, tennis, and access to the historic Lee Cabin. The natural phenomenon of the disappearing river is a draw in itself, and the surrounding George Washington National Forest extends the outdoor options considerably for anyone who wants to go further.

What time of year is best for visiting Lost River State Park?

Fall is the most popular season, with foliage across the Allegheny ridges that rivals anything in the region. Spring brings wildflowers and quieter trails as the park reopens after winter. Summer is ideal for swimming and full use of the park’s facilities. Winter visitors will find solitude and exceptional stillness in the forest, with the occasional snowfall turning the mountain into something worth the cold. Blue Maple has cabin rentals available across all seasons.
