We often take our three little kids and dog to the cabin with us, so we're very family- and dog-friendly. Unfortunately we don't allow cats (we're allergic).

1. Lost River State Park (distance from house - 45 mins) A lovely state park nestled in the Lost River Valley. You can enjoy a range of activities like hiking, birdwatching, picnicking, and fishing. The park offers several easy to moderate hiking trails and a beautiful setting for a quiet retreat.
2. Seneca Rocks (distance from house - 1 hour) A well-known natural landmark, Seneca Rocks is a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts. You can take a short, easy hike up to the observation deck for stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area or try rock climbing (there are guides available).
3. Capon Springs and Farms (distance from house - 45 mins) A historic retreat offering a peaceful escape, Capon Springs and Farms is a wonderful spot to relax and rejuvenate. The property includes hiking trails, a spa, hot springs, and a relaxing atmosphere. It’s ideal for a day trip or a weekend getaway.
4. Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad (distance from house - 30 mins) This scenic train ride takes you along the Potomac River, with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. It’s particularly famous for spotting bald eagles during the winter months.
5. North Fork Mountain Trail (distance from house - 1 hour) A rugged, scenic trail that runs along North Fork Mountain. It offers amazing views of the Allegheny Highlands and is one of the best long-distance hikes in West Virginia. The trail offers a more challenging hike for experienced trekkers.
6. The Trough (distance from house - 40 mins) A beautiful, winding mountain road that takes you along the Potomac River. Known for its scenic views, it’s perfect for a leisurely drive, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can also explore the river by canoe or kayak.
7. The George Washington National Forest (distance from house - 40 mins) This vast forest offers a wealth of recreational activities such as hiking, camping, fishing, and wildlife watching. There are multiple trails, including sections of the Appalachian Trail.
8. Blackwater Falls State Park (distance from house - 1 hour 15 mins) Known for its stunning waterfall, Blackwater Falls is one of the most picturesque parks in West Virginia. The falls are especially breathtaking during autumn when the leaves change colors. The park offers several trails, picnic areas, and opportunities for outdoor recreation.
9. Canaan Valley Resort State Park (distance from house - 1.5 hours) A year-round resort offering a variety of activities for visitors, from hiking and biking in the summer to skiing and snowboarding in the winter. In addition to its recreational offerings, it’s an excellent spot for wildlife watching.
10. Petersburg, WV (Shopping and Dining) (distance from house - 45 mins) The nearby town of Petersburg offers a quaint small-town experience with local shops, cafes, and restaurants. It’s a charming place to stop for a meal or stroll around, and you can also visit the Riverside Park, which has a lovely walking trail along the Potomac River.
While there aren’t large shopping centers or many restaurants immediately around Rio, you can explore small towns like Petersburg, Moorefield, and Franklin for local eats and shops. Many of the nearby towns offer locally made goods, antiques, and charming cafés where you can grab a bite.
Rio, WV, may be quiet, but its proximity to numerous state parks, hiking trails, and small towns makes it a wonderful base for outdoor adventures and relaxation in nature!
