Christmas in Harpers Ferry 2026: Olde Tyme Christmas, Light Show & Events

Christmas in Harpers Ferry 2026: Olde Tyme Christmas, Light Show & Events Featured Image

The town of Harpers Ferry turns into a storybook in December. Garland wraps the old iron railings on High Street, carolers sing on the brick sidewalks, and the mountains above the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers look like a Christmas card. If you have ever wanted to spend the holidays somewhere that feels unhurried, warm, and genuinely festive, this is the place.

At Blue Maple, we host guests in cabins all over West Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley, and the week leading up to Christmas is one of our favorite times of year to be here. Our team has spent many December weekends walking the Lower Town, catching the parade, and warming up with hot chocolate after the Light Show. We put this guide together so you can plan a Christmas in Harpers Ferry trip that actually feels like a holiday, not a to-do list.

Below you will find the official Olde Tyme Christmas 2026 schedule, the Holiday Light Show details, our favorite shops and restaurants, nearby towns worth a side trip, and simple tips for visiting Harpers Ferry in December.

Olde Tyme Christmas 2026: The Heart of the Holiday Season

Olde Tyme Christmas is the big one. It is the signature holiday festival for Harpers Ferry and the neighboring town of Bolivar, and in 2026 it celebrates its 49th year. The festival takes over the historic Lower Town for one long opening night and two full weekends of free, family-friendly fun.

Olde Tyme Christmas 2026 dates:

  • Opening Ceremony: Friday, December 4, 2026, 6 to 9 pm
  • First Weekend: Saturday and Sunday, December 5 to 6, 2026
  • Second Weekend: Saturday and Sunday, December 12 to 13, 2026

These are the dates posted on the festival’s official site, experienceharpersferry.com. They can still change, so check there before you drive in.

What makes Olde Tyme Christmas special is how low-key and genuinely old-fashioned it feels. Expect strolling carolers in Victorian costume, horse-drawn carriage rides, a Christmas parade down Washington Street, living history performances, open-hearth cooking demos, roasting chestnuts, visits with Father Christmas, and small handmade markets tucked inside shops and churches. Most of the activity happens along High Street, Potomac Street, and Shenandoah Street, all within an easy walk.

💡 Local tip: The town shuts down most of Washington Street during the festival. The National Park Service usually runs a free trolley from Harpers Ferry Middle School to the Lower Town during Saturday hours, so park up top and ride down. It saves a lot of hunting for parking.

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park

The National Park is the backdrop for almost everything that happens during Olde Tyme Christmas. The streets you wander through, the stone staircases, the Point where the rivers meet, and most of the shops and buildings all sit inside Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Rangers decorate the historic buildings in simple period style, and the whole Lower Town feels like you walked into 1860.

Guests often tell us a few hours is plenty to see the main highlights, especially the walk across the railroad bridge, the view from Jefferson Rock, and the small museums on Shenandoah Street. In December the park is quieter than peak summer, so you can take your time.

Lower Town Harpers Ferry

Lower Town is the stretch of brick buildings between Shenandoah Street and the water. It is the walkable, shoppable, photographable part of town, and during Olde Tyme Christmas it is where the carolers, carriage rides, and markets happen. Expect wreaths on every door, candles in the windows, and smoke drifting out of the fireplaces at a few of the historic buildings.

  • Rating: 4.6 stars on Google
  • Area: High Street, Potomac Street, and Shenandoah Street
  • Best time to visit: Late afternoon into early evening, when the lamps are lit and the sunset catches the mountains

Guests tell us a half day in Lower Town is often enough if you just want to stroll, but during the festival we recommend giving yourself a full evening. The music, food, and warm shops are worth lingering for.

John Brown’s Fort

If you have time between carolers, stop by John Brown’s Fort. It is the small brick fire-engine house where the 1859 raid ended, and it is one of the most photographed buildings in town. During Olde Tyme Christmas the surrounding square is often lit with lanterns and makes a quiet contrast to the busier shopping streets.

Harpers Ferry Holiday Light Show

If Olde Tyme Christmas is the historic side of Christmas in Harpers Ferry, the Harpers Ferry Light Show is the sparkly, modern side. It is a walk-through holiday light trail at River Riders, just outside town, with hundreds of thousands of lights, 10 walk-through displays, a hot cocoa station, a play zone for kids and a four-story aerial overlook. It opened for the first time in the 2025 season.

Guests who have been love the easy, no-stress format: you stroll the trail at your own pace and warm up afterward with hot cocoa. It is also one of the few activities around that is genuinely great for toddlers through grandparents in the same group. It sits on the same property as Snow Riders, so you can pair it with an afternoon of snow tubing in Harpers Ferry.

  • Season: Last season it ran from November 21, 2025 to January 31, 2026 (check harpersferrylightshow.com for the 2026 dates)

💡 Good to know: On busy weekends the Light Show can draw a line. We like going on a weeknight if the schedule allows, or booking a ticket for opening time on a Friday.

Where to Eat and Shop During Christmas in Harpers Ferry

One of the best parts of visiting Harpers Ferry in December is how walkable the dining and shopping is. You can bounce between a candy shop, a cozy restaurant, and a riverside brewery without moving your car. These are the stops we send our Blue Maple guests to most often during the holidays.

True Treats Historic Candy

True Treats is the kind of shop that makes kids pause and grandparents light up. It is the only research-based historic candy store in the country, with sweets grouped by era: Civil War ribbon candy, Victorian horehound drops, 1920s chocolate bars, mid-century bubble gum. During Olde Tyme Christmas they lean heavily into holiday-era candies, which pairs perfectly with the costumed carolers outside.

Guests often tell us this is where they picked up stocking stuffers that got the biggest reaction on Christmas morning. The organic dark chocolate coffee beans get mentioned a lot.

The Rabbit Hole

The Rabbit Hole sits right on High Street, in the thick of the Olde Tyme Christmas action. It is a casual spot with a solid menu of sandwiches, salads, and comfort food, and it is usually where we tell guests to warm up after a chilly walk. The C&O sandwich is a local favorite, and the atmosphere during the festival weekends is lively but not overwhelming.

Harpers Ferry Brewing

A short drive across the river in Loudoun County, Harpers Ferry Brewing has mountain views, a long tap list, and a food menu that works for a family lunch or a quiet pint by the fire pit. It is a nice break from the busy festival streets, especially if your group has mixed interests.

💡 Did you know? The brewery sits on the ridge above the Potomac, so in December you can often see down into the valley where Harpers Ferry glows at night.

Nearby Christmas Towns Worth a Side Trip

Harpers Ferry sits in a corner where West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia meet, which means a 20 to 30 minute drive in any direction opens up more holiday ideas. These are the stops we send guests to when they want to stretch Christmas across more than one town.

Shepherdstown Historic District

Shepherdstown is about 20 minutes north of Harpers Ferry and is the oldest town in West Virginia. In December the historic district on German Street gets strung with white lights, local shops stay open late, and smaller church-run markets pop up on weekends. It is quieter than Harpers Ferry, which is exactly why we love it for a slow morning or a Sunday afternoon.

Appalachian Trail Conservancy Visitor Center

The Appalachian Trail passes right through Harpers Ferry, and the ATC Visitor Center is a lovely little stop in December. It is quiet, friendly, and makes a nice warm-up break between the Lower Town and the car. The volunteers are famously welcoming, and this is where thru-hikers get their official photo taken for the trail book, which is a fun thing to see even if you are not hiking.

Harpers Ferry in December: What to Know Before You Go

December in Harpers Ferry is cold, but not harsh. Daytime highs usually sit in the low to mid 40s Fahrenheit, and night temperatures drop into the 20s and low 30s. Light snow is common on the ridges, and the rivers rarely freeze. If you grew up with winter, it will feel familiar. If you did not, dress in layers.

A few things we always tell Blue Maple guests:

  • Wear real shoes. The historic streets are brick and stone, often damp. Fashion sneakers slide. Boots or trail shoes are the move.
  • Park up, walk down. Lower Town parking is tight year-round and especially tight during Olde Tyme Christmas weekends. The trolley from the Middle School lot is free during the festival.
  • Pack a hat and gloves. The wind off the Potomac at the Point is colder than the temperature on your phone.
  • Bring cash for small vendors. Many of the church markets, carriage rides, and smaller sellers take cash only.
  • Reserve dinner in advance. On festival Saturday nights the Lower Town restaurants fill up fast.
  • Give yourself time for the Light Show. Even on quiet nights, plan 45 minutes to an hour.

💡 Quick insight: Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are often the quietest, loveliest days in Harpers Ferry. If you can stay the long weekend, you get the full festival energy on Saturday and a near-empty Lower Town on Christmas morning.

Where to Stay for Christmas in Harpers Ferry

If you want the full Christmas-in-Harpers-Ferry experience, staying in a cabin nearby makes a huge difference. You come back from the festival with cold toes, light a fire, and spend the evening in a hot tub watching the stars. That is the trip. A hotel room cannot do that.

At Blue Maple we manage more than 180 cabins across West Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley, including a curated set of properties built for the holidays: real wood-burning stoves or fireplaces, big kitchens for Christmas dinner, hot tubs, and enough beds for the whole family.
